Resources for Parents and Families

Picture
Due to the pervasiveness of religion in our society raising a non-religious child can pose challenges. Here we aim to deal with a few of the most common issues raised with us by parents but if you do not find what you are looking for, please do contact us.

The Teach Don't Preach website was set up by Atheist Ireland to inform parents of the major issues regarding the role of religion in Irish schools and covers issues such as opting out etc.

The following page of the British Humanist Association Website is dedicated to Humanist families discussing family life. Here members of the BHA with families of their own answer a selection of the questions we often receive, showing a range of approaches to issues such as: “catching” religion;school worship and religious education; magic and fantasy; death and bereavement; introducing Humanism; marriage and relationships.

List of recommended resources for primary and secondary level children, and for teachers and students: books and other materials covering a wide range of issues and aimed at primary and secondary age school children. Also included is a section on background reading aimed at teachers and students.

Books for bereaved children: an article by Marilyn Mason, former BHA Education Officer, first published in the International Journal of Children’s Spirituality, December 2000.

Camp Quest is a network of residential summer camps for the children of Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists, Brights, or whatever other terms might be applied to those who hold to a naturalistic, not supernatural world view. Currently they are only available in England and America, but who knows one day there might be an Irish Camp Quest.
